UNDP’s Accomplished Projects with the SLCS

The UNDP also helped the SLCS in making impressive progress in some facilities to build on the industries master plan with a specific focus on Agriculture which shows real potential in the SLCS in becoming self- reliant in a not too distant future.

 

 

Training all the officers in the Public Relations Unit. Because of that, the SLCS, unlike before, now has an open door policy to media institutions, which is demonstrated in the publication of articles in newspapers, and granting of radio and TV interviews courtesy of the SLCS’ rebranded ‘Public Relations unit’.

Also, at a time when some Corrections facilities in the Provinces struggled to get water, UNDP provided funds for Water and Sanitation. Today, seven (7) Centres that used to churn out unbearable smell, because water was a challenge, are now clean and have appealing settings.

Over 35 officers have also been capacitated in countries like the USA, Kenya, Canada, etc., with funds provided by the UNDP and the US Department of State and INL.

The UNDP has also contributed greatly in tackling overcrowding. They provided fund for the construction of the Pre- Trial Detention and Simulation at Waterloo, and for the re- construction of two inmates blocks at the Mafanta Correctional Centre. The newly constructed Centre at Waterloo is now housing 100 male inmates and 10 female inmates.

UNDP and INL also contributed in strengthening the partnership between the Government Technical Institute (GTI), leading to the GTI providing technical training to 200 inmates and 35 officers on various skills relevant for their reintegration into society.

Moreover, UNDP funded the Life by Design to conduct training for 30 graduate officers on Case Management. These officers have begun work in Freetown, Waterloo, Port Loko, Makeni, Kenema, Bo, and Kono Corrections Facilities they have become knowledgeable in the discipline.
